Grading chart (easy grader)

This chart is built from the total questions you enter above — each row shows the grade for that many wrong answers. Teachers: print it and grade a whole class in seconds. Students: find your row before you even see the marked paper.

WrongRightScoreLetter grade

The chart shows up to 50 wrong answers. Letter grades use the standard US scale shown on our Grade Calculator page.

How the easy grader maths works

Every question counts the same here, so the grade is simple: score = right answers ÷ total questions × 100. Missed 3 out of 25? That is 22 right, and 22 ÷ 25 = 88% — a B+. The chart works the same way in reverse: traditional printed easy graders were just this table, pre-computed for common test sizes like 10, 20, 25, 50 and 100 questions.

If some questions are worth more points than others, or your class uses categories with weights (homework 20%, tests 40%…), use the weighted Grade Calculator instead. Working towards a course target? The Final Grade Calculator shows what you need on the final exam.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my test grade?

Divide the number of questions you answered correctly by the total number of questions, then multiply by 100. For example, 22 correct out of 25 questions is 22 ÷ 25 = 0.88, which is 88% — a B+ on the standard US scale. This calculator does it instantly from either your right answers or your wrong answers.

What is an easy grader?

An easy grader is a chart or tool teachers have used for decades to convert the number of wrong answers on a test into a percentage grade without doing the maths each time. You look up the test size, find how many questions were missed, and read off the grade. The chart on this page generates that table for any number of questions and you can print it for your classroom.

If I got 3 wrong out of 25, what is my grade?

3 wrong out of 25 means 22 correct, which is 88% — a B+ on the standard US letter scale (A from 93%, B+ from 87%). Try it in the calculator above: enter 25 questions and 3 wrong.

What percentage is a passing grade?

In most US schools a D (around 60–65% and above, depending on the school's cut-offs) is the lowest passing grade, and anything below that is an F. Some schools and courses set the pass mark higher, so check your school's policy if it matters.

My test is weighted or has different points per question. Can I still use this?

This easy grader assumes every question is worth the same number of points. If your questions are worth different points, add up the points you earned and the total points instead, or use our weighted Grade Calculator which accepts a score and a weight for every category of work.

Does this calculator store my test scores?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser as you type. Nothing is sent to a server, stored, or shared.

Can teachers use this to grade a whole class?

Yes — that is what the grading chart is for. Enter the number of questions on the test once, then read each student's grade straight from the row matching how many questions they missed. Print the chart and keep it with your mark book.
