Final Grade Calculator
"What do I need on the final?" — enter your current grade, the grade you want to finish with, and how much the final exam counts for. You will get the exact score you need, straight away.
Your needed score will appear here as soon as all three boxes are filled in.

How the calculation works
Your course grade is a weighted average of the work you have already done and the final exam still to come. If the final is worth 30%, then everything before it is worth 70%, and your current grade covers that 70%:
Needed score = ( Target − Current × (1 − Final weight) ) ÷ Final weight
Worked example: your current grade is 88%, you want to finish with 90%, and the final is worth 25% of the course. Needed = (90 − 88 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (90 − 66) ÷ 0.25 = 96%. Tough but possible. Change the target to 92% and the answer becomes 104% — impossible, because even a perfect final would leave you at 91%.
The three possible outcomes are:
- Achievable: the score you need is between 0% and 100% — that is your study target.
- Already secured: you would hit your target even with 0% on the final. (Still sit the exam — many schools fail students who do not show up, whatever the maths says.)
- Out of reach: even 100% on the final is not enough. The calculator shows the highest grade still possible so you can reset your target to something real.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?
Take your target grade, subtract your current grade multiplied by the share of the course already completed, then divide by the final exam's weight. Formula: needed score = (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight, using decimals. For example, with a current grade of 85%, a target of 90% and a final worth 30%: (90 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 101.7% — so that target would be out of reach. This calculator runs the formula instantly.
What does it mean if I need more than 100% on the final?
It means the target grade cannot be reached, even with a perfect score on the final — the maths simply does not stretch that far. The calculator will tell you the highest overall grade you can still achieve, so you can pick a realistic target and aim for that instead.
What if the calculator says my grade is already secured?
That means your grade stays at or above your target even if you scored 0% on the final, because your current work already carries enough weight. Well done — but sit the final anyway: skipping it can trigger an automatic fail or an incomplete under many school policies, whatever the numbers say.
How do I find out how much my final exam is worth?
Your course syllabus or student handbook lists the grading breakdown — look for the percentage next to "final exam" or "final assessment". If your class uses points instead, divide the final exam's points by the total points for the course and multiply by 100 to get its weight as a percentage.
My class grades by points, not percentages. Can I still use this?
Yes. Convert first: your current grade percentage is points earned so far divided by points possible so far, times 100. The final's weight is the final exam's points divided by the total course points, times 100. Enter those two percentages along with your target and the calculator works as normal.
Is the score I need the same as my final grade?
No — the number this calculator gives you is the score you need to achieve on the final exam itself. Your overall course grade will then be your current grade blended with that exam score according to the exam's weight. The "What happens if…" table on this page shows your final course grade for a range of possible exam scores.
Does this calculator save the numbers I enter?
